Week 2

My second week went just as well as my first week did. I continued to take shortened, colder showers around six minutes long with half heat on the dial every night during the week. During this week I saved another 145 gallons of water and used half as much energy as I normally would have heating only half as much water as I did before to half the heat I was taking showers at before this project. If I continue this habit for thirty days I will save 560 gallons of water. If I continue my new shorter shower habit for a year I will save around 6720 gallons of water! That's quite a bit!  If everyone at the summit took 5 minutes off of their normal showering time as a group we could save 56,000 gallons of water in just one week. Not to mention the monetary savings if they took colder showers than normal which require less energy to heat and produce fewer greenhouse gasses. Since everyone's plumbing and heating systems are different the overall amount saved could vary but...

week 4

Over winter break I stuck to my impact goal for the most part. However, I was in Eastern Washington where it was very cold most days so the allure of long hot showers got to me twice. I ended up taking two hot showers around 10 minutes each. I was able to negate this impact by skipping showers on the days where my family and I drove back and forth from Wenatchee. After reading this  article  that HB provided to us I asked some of my friends to try and shorten their showers too. I did this by telling them how much water they could save and providing structural motivation from the article. If I was to advertise my impact methods to the general public I would cite this article's methods by simplifying the methods of what they have to do down to just shortening their showers and cooling them off. Then I would tell them all the benefits of this simple undertaking. I will most likely continue this habit in the future as it has become part of my daily routine and has good benefits f...

week 3

I have gotten my showers down to 7 minutes while also taking them colder than I did before. I have been able to do this every time I have showered since we started the project. I would be pretty likely to continue this habit even if the project ended today based on how much water, time, and money I save just by this basic habit change. It also helps the environment by saving water that we can see being used in other areas on the map ₂.  Around the first ten days, it was pretty easy to take shorter showers without thinking about it. Since it wasn't a super large change it took a shorter time to get used to than the article predicted₁. The article makes me just as likely to continue my habit as I was before I read it.  It is important for people to know its hard to change big habits in the 21 days even if that's what they have heard.  1) Clear, J. Week 1

Week One The first week of my personal impact project went easily and according to plan. I went from taking ten-minute hot showers to six-minute warm showers. Since I listen to music in the shower I just listened to two three minute songs and then I knew it was time to get out . By taking just four minutes off of my nightly shower I was able to get rid of twenty-eight excess minutes of showering. This translates to about 140 gallons of water saved, so not bad for the first week! Not only did I reduce my water usage I was also able to minimize my energy use by turning the shower temperature dial to only half as far as I usually do. This means that I heated less water than normal to a lower temperature than I usually do which uses less energy and produces fewer carbon emissions . I expected to have more trouble shaving time off my showers but it wasn't as hard as I expected once I got used to the change in temperature. To continue saving more water and energy I just need to ...
