Week 1

Week One

The first week of my personal impact project went easily and according to plan. I went from taking ten-minute hot showers to six-minute warm showers. Since I listen to music in the shower I just listened to two three minute songs and then I knew it was time to get out. By taking just four minutes off of my nightly shower I was able to get rid of twenty-eight excess minutes of showering. This translates to about 140 gallons of water saved, so not bad for the first week! Not only did I reduce my water usage I was also able to minimize my energy use by turning the shower temperature dial to only half as far as I usually do. This means that I heated less water than normal to a lower temperature than I usually do which uses less energy and produces fewer carbon emissions. I expected to have more trouble shaving time off my showers but it wasn't as hard as I expected once I got used to the change in temperature. To continue saving more water and energy I just need to keep taking less time in the shower than I was by only staying in for five to six minutes. As it is a relatively simple undertaking I don't anticipate needing outside help to achieve this goal. Helping save water and money on bills is enough of an incentive to continue with this project.

  1. How much energy (gas) do you save? How do you know you "saved $1.50 by taking colder showers"? How much water do you save? More sources!!

  2. I can see your idea here, I need to see more information. The statistics need to be backed up by credible evidence. Possibly try to convey a more specific end goal? I found this site talking about showers times, and how helpful they can be. Check it out!

  6. I enjoy the specificity of the post. Could you cite or explain how you got those numbers?

  7. Ayeeee I validate your experience Max because saving water and money is a great way to incentivize taking shorter showers because that has been the only thing keeping me from not taking longer showers 👍

  8. I noticed how you noted that you turned the shower dial 3/4 of how far you usually would, I assume you used this to calculate the amount of water you saved by estimating how much you used before, one suggestion would be to ensure you explain the process you used to find this information as it will certainly improve your cog skill score!
